Description of work
Raised decking area replacement of an old and unsafe deck with a new similar structure.
The existing raised decking area had been constructed using inadequate materials and soon became unsafe. The joists used were 100mm x 50mm rather than 150mm x 50mm and in addition the joists had been centred at 600mm instead of 400mm. Altogether it was a very unsatisfactory design which creates a springy deck which is unsafe.
A new frame was constructed using the correct joist size, and the joists were centred at 400mm centres to rectify the problem of movement caused by poor construction. Softwood deck boards were then fixed to the frame. The Balustrade was installed using tensioned stainless-steel wire. Because the deck was raised, we formed a face on the front of the deck to hide the structure underneath.
The new deck was completed to a safe standard using more appropriate construction guidelines.
