Description of work
A retaining wall and paved area was required by the client, who had recently added a single story extension to the house and needed to reinstate a paved area.
Retaining wall design
The area had already been dug out by the builders so our first job was to dig out the trench for the foundations which were 450mm deep by 400mm wide. We used concrete to form the foundations; a 9 inch concrete block retaining wall was constructed including drainage holes; this was then finished with a holmes sand-render finish using stainless steel beads. Once complete the paving was laid and an aco drain was installed to run the rain water to a nearby gulley.
This particular client had just retired and was keen to do a lot of the finishing himself: the backfilling and gravel in the channels was completed by the client and the walls have since been painted.
